Types of Stock Market Indices

In India, Stock markets indices are broadly classified into following categories:

  • Broad Market Indices: These indices represent the overall performance of the stock market and include stocks from various sectors of the economy. The two most popular broad market indices in India are the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50.
  • Sectoral Indices: These indices track the performance of specific sectors of the economy, such as banking, information technology, healthcare, and energy. Examples of sectoral indices in India include the BSE Bankex, BSE IT Index,Nifty Bank Index and Nifty Pharma Index.
  • Market Capitalization Indices: These indices are based on the market capitalization of the companies listed on the exchange. The Nifty 50 and BSE 100 are examples of market capitalization indices in India.
  • Strategy Indices: These indices are designed to reflect a specific investment strategy or style. Examples of strategy indices in India include the Nifty Low Volatility 50 Index, which includes stocks with lower volatility, and the Nifty Alpha 50 Index, which comprises stocks with high alpha.
  • Thematic Indices: These indices are designed to track the performance of a particular theme or trend, such as sustainability or innovation. Examples of thematic indices in India include the Nifty India Consumption Index and the Nifty Pharma Index.
