Municipal Bonds

Municipal bonds in India are bonds issued by local government bodies to raise funds to finance various infrastructure development projects such as water supply systems, sewerage, solid waste management, public transportation, infrastructure and more. These bonds are also known as "Muni bonds" or "Urban Local Body (ULB) bonds". Municipal bonds in India are typically long-term in nature and pay a fixed rate of interest to the bondholders.

Municipal bonds are issued by Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) such as municipal corporations, municipalities, and urban development authorities. The bonds are rated by credit rating agencies such as CRISIL, ICRA, and CARE based on the creditworthiness of the ULBs.

In India, municipal bonds are relatively new and their issuance is currently limited to a few cities. In 2017, the Pune Municipal Corporation became the first city to issue municipal bonds.

Investors can purchase municipal bonds in India through the primary market, where bonds are issued for the first time, or through the secondary market, where they can buy and sell bonds after they have been issued.

Types of Municipal Bonds

  • General Obligation Bonds (GO Bonds) These are municipal bonds that are backed by the credit and taxing power of the issuing local government body, such as a municipal corporation or municipality. The proceeds from the sale of these bonds are used to finance general infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and schools.
  • Revenue Bonds These are municipal bonds that are backed by the revenue generated by a specific project or facility, such as a toll road, water treatment plant, or stadium. The proceeds from the sale of these bonds are used to finance the construction or expansion of the revenue-generating project.
